The story began to unfold after William set to work last spring, creating and perfecting the recipe for delicious natural gourmet cookie treats to thank his beloved pony, Sage, who is a Mustang rescue. The home baked heart shaped treats quickly got noticed at the barn. The word began to spread and friends began to request orders specifically for “the natural treats” our natural gourmet delicious “health cookie” treat.
His first batch was created last year in his own kitchen, simply made with love. Through careful research and taste testing, William hand selected the finest and most loved ingredients that horses crave, including oats, peppermint, carrots, oats, peanuts, molasses, apples, flour, honey, bananas, aloe vera, flax, chia, licorice root and other natural, heart healthy vitamin rich ingredients and began to mix and blend until he came up with a soft, chewy, rich, deep, dark heart shaped cookie. He started making appearances at horse shows, events and fairs, handing out free samples. William began to meet and talk with other kids who had Dyslexia. Kids began to take notice of the boy who had Dyslexia, the boy who inspired and encouraged kids who struggled with Dyslexia to think of Dyslexia as a difference. He told kids that the obstacles would get easier if they learned to focus on their strengths. He encouraged them to follow their passions and they too would succeed. A story was born.
With the help of horse friends, supporters, and his past and present trainers, who taste tested and critiqued, and his supportive family, mom, sister, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins who joined together and worked tirelessly in the kitchen, or on the front porch on Monday family dinner night, crunching numbers, creating the business plan, delivering orders to clients, the news spread quickly.
William works all aspects of the business. He is in charge of the recipes and he and his sister, MacKenzie came up with marketing concepts. The recipes were taste tested and tried by happy horses. Packaging was ready to put on the shelves by summer. By early fall, reorders poured in and then the offer came to increase production at Deli on a Bagel, Pennington, William was able to go from his small empire in his own kitchen to filling larger orders, working hard to produce and meet increasing sales. His first retailers in New Jersey, The Tack Shelter in Colts Neck and Ricks Saddle Shop will always be special. They believed in a boy with a dream. Today, sales have grown from his home state of New Jersey to New York and now Vermont. Through friends and his teachers at school, those that mentor and guide, William has gained confidence and knowledge. He has produced his logos under the direction of his school art teacher, learned how to write a business plan, marketing and selling at local horse shows. He has learned to create an LLC. by watching utube videos, technology has given William a way to quickly find answers, he learns day by day to compensate, he has become very adept at solving problems as they come. He is a visual thinker, creative and can often multi-task. He is focused on success and is tireless and persistent. He works hard and isn’t afraid to fail. He attributes those characteristics from overcoming the reading and writing obstacles he has had to struggle with daily. William firmly believes that Dyslexia is not a disorder, it is a difference. It has not been easy. William has often been misunderstood and has had difficulties communicating that he is really smart, but learns differently. It has taught him to advocate for himself. To help people understand how he thinks and how he succeeds. It has taught him empathy and compassion. His dream is to pitch his product to the Shark Tank. He is not daunted by Dyslexia.
